NEW PROPOSED FEDERAL AIR QUALITY REGULATION Paint Stripping and Miscellaneous Surface Coating Operations at Area Sources Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 40, Part 63, Subpart HHHHHH (40 CFR 63, Subpart HHHHHH)

U.S. EPA is proposing new air quality regulations that will affect small businesses and area sources with miscellaneous parts and products painting operations, autobody repair operations, and paint stripping operations. U.S. EPA has published the proposed rule in the Federal Register and is requesting comments from the public and the regulated community. This is your chance to review the proposed rule and submit comments to EPA before it becomes final.

Don't be caught unaware and out of compliance!

The proposed rule would mandate the following:

• Painter training and certification within 60 days of hiring and every five years;
• Use of paint booths or enclosures with three wall panels or curtains and full ceiling, equipped with ventilation to provide negative pressure;
• Use of fiberglass or polyester filters in paint booths;
• Use of HVLP or electrostatic paint spray guns (or guns with equivalent transfer efficiency);
• Use of enclosed spray gun cleaning machines; and
• Reductions in the use of paint strippers containing methylene chloride.
